Henning Mankell has been awarded the Gumshoe Award for best european crime novel during 2004 by Mystery ink.

Evangelische Akademie des Tutzing awarded Henning Mankell with the Tolerance Prize in may 2004. Mankell received the prize from the hands of Bishop Desmond Tutu.

Henning Mankell has been awarded many literary awards for his books and plays.

As the first Scandinavian author Henning Mankell was awarded the Golden Dagger for fiction in 2001 by the British Crime Writers Association. Henning Mankell received the award for his novel Sidetracked (The Harvill Press). Apart from the honour, Henning Mankell also received a cheque for £3.000. The motivation reads as follows:

Well-established in his own language, where this is one in an acclaimed series, this is a wonderful discovery from outside the Anglo-American scene. Henning Mankell gives a brilliantly evocative portrait of contemporary Sweden, in a convincing translation. Kurt Wallander is a policeman with a colourful past, a protagonist of great humanity whose crime solving is believably set against the ordinary details of daily life. The plotting is tight, the domestic relationships well drawn, the subject topical.

Apart from receiving lots of awards, Henning Mankell has had a literary award founded in his name, the Swedish Afrikas röst, given every second year to a notable African writer.

• Swedish newspaper Expressens childrens book prize Heffaklumpen 1997 for The boy who slept with snow in his bed
• The City of Berlins childrens book awards for non german writers 1997 for Eldens hemlighet (The secret of the fire)
