The Palestine Festival of Literature was just about to start when armed Israeli police entered the premises.
Henning Mankell was one out of several well-known international authors visiting the festival. When Israeli police entered the building and interrupted the event, he encouraged the audience not to lose their hopes.
The one week long literary festival is arranged in cooperation with the British Council and the UN organ Unesco.
According to Israeli police the event was interrupted since there had been suspicions that it was arranged or financed by the Palestine government in Jerusalem.
The event continued after that in the garden outside the building, where Henning Mankell compared the occurrence to the life in South Africa during Apartheid.
- What really defines us as human beings is our ability to dialogue. The only way, in which we can save ourselves, is our ability to conduct a dialogue with one another, Henning Mankell said.
